Configuring Canberra (1)
Painting by David Hearne as part of his Configuring Canberra series.
This is a large vertically-oriented (or can hang horizontally) canvas oil painting dominated by a dense, intricate network of multicoloured, glyph-like marks layered over an abstract background of blues, greens and earthy browns. The surface is covered in tiny, interlocking strokes resembling miniature 'L' or 'T' shapes - that create a mosaic or pixelated visual field. The painting evokes the look of a topographical aerial map, a digital data visualisation, or an abstract urban landscape.
The interplay between rhythmic, staccato marks and the deep, fluid tones beneath gives the composition a strong sense of optical vibration.
